THE 9 ELEMENTS OF HIP HOP

BREAKIN'

The dance element of hip-hop, performed by dancers called B-Girls or B-Boys. Birthed in the late 1970s in New York, breaking blended movement styles such as jazz and martial arts with dance styles from the Caribbean, Latin America, and Africa. B-Girls and BBoys got their name because they danced over the DJ’s “breaks” at hip-hop parties in the Bronx.

EMCEEIN'

Emcee an acronym for the "MC" Master of Ceremonies. Emcees began as hosts at hip-hop parties who would prompt the breakers to dance. Influenced by original spoken-word artists, emcees began to do rhythmic call-and-response with the audience, a technique that eventually morphed into the poetic form of rapping that we know now.

DEEJAYIN'

The DJ existed before hip-hop. It’s an acronym for the word disc jockey. Originally, the DJ’s job was to play recorded music for an audience either on radio or live for an audience. But the hip-hop DJ took it to the next level by making record spinning into an art form called turntabalism.

BEATBOXIN'

Beatboxing is also known as the “Fifth Element,” the ability to make a beat with one’s mouth instead of drums or drum machines. Beatboxing became a staple sound of hip-hop and modern dance music.

GRAFFITI ART

Graffiti is hip-hop’s visual element. The modern form of graffiti or “graff” actually began before hip-hop music and dance, but it quickly became a part of the culture as many graffiti artists grew up in the same area as other hip-hop artists. Many graffiti artists are emcees, deejays, and/or breakers.

STREET KNOWLEDGE

The study and application of ancestral wisdom. Commonly refers to the basic common sense and accumulated wisdom of urban families. It consists of techniques, phrases, codes and terms used to survive within the inner cities.

STREET LANGUAGE

The study and application of street communication. Commonly referred to as Black English, Urban Slang and Ebonics. It is Hip Hop’s urban language and linguistic codes—the verbal communication of the streets. Advanced Street Language includes the correct pronunciation of one’s native and national language as it pertains to urban life. In addition, advanced Street Language deals with one’s communication skills even beyond what one says.

STREET FASHION

The study and application of urban trends and styles. Commonly refers to the clothing trends of urban centers. However, Street Fashion deals with all trends and styles of Hip Hop’s culture—what’s in and what’s out, regardless of the expression. Its practitioners are known as Hiphoppas.

STREET ENTREPRENEURIALISM

The study and application of fair trade and Hip Hop business management. Commonly referred to as street trade, having game, the natural salesman, or the smooth diplomat. It is the readiness to engage in the creation of a business venture that brings about grassroots business practices. Many of Hip Hop’s apprenticeships begin here.
